Svetlana is looking for a new Head Gardener!
Svetlana Village is a 40-person Camphill community about 3 hours from St.Petersburg, Russia. This is an international community of developmentally disabled people from all over Russia. Our volunteers come from Russia, Europe, North America and beyond.
We are situated in a rural area, and it’s not uncommon to see neighbours carrying milk pails down the road, but the marvelous cultural life of St.Petersburg is easily accessible by train from our village. Old villages, collective farms and factory towns nearby provide insights into rural and urban life in post-Soviet Russia.
We have a well established biodynamic garden that is looking for an individual or a couple to lead and organize the gardening efforts. There is an incredible amount of freedom to expand on past initiatives and begin your own. The garden enlists lots of helping hands in the summer and has become more beautiful, bountiful and self-sufficient each year. The garden provides the village with food as well as a source of income, and cooperates with the rest of the farm as an important therapeutic tool.
Be unafraid to work long days in the summer and sleep long nights in the winter. Our garden grows over 40 varieties of vegetables. The garden and field crops combine to roughly 10 acres in size. The growing season is short but we still manage to pull out tender carrots as big as your forearm come September and make jam to last into the next summer. It truly is a rich life!
